Footrace Across the USA Announced

Are you a runner looking for a new challenge? Do you enjoy running long distances? Then you'll definitely want to consider the newly announced Race Across the USA, a 140-day stage race scheduled to get underway early in 2015. The event, which will serve as a platform to raise awareness about childhood inactivity, which has helped to lead to an increase in child obesity in the U.S.

The race will get underway in Huntington Beach, CA on January 16 of next year. From there, runners will head east, crossing through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, before eventually reaching the White House in Washington DC, and press on to Edgewater Park in Maryland. In all, runners will cover a total of 3080 miles (4956 km) along the way. They hope to finish the run on June 2, 2015.

A core team of ten runners will run the entire length, coast-to-coast, across the U.S. They will be joined by up to 20 runners in each state that the pass through. Each stage will be approximately 26.2 miles (42.1 km), or the length of a marathon. The stages will be timed, and a winner will eventually be crowned.

The primary organization that Race Across the USA is supporting is the 100 Mile Club, a nonprofit that seeks to challenge kids to run or walk 100 miles in a year. The goal of the club is to encourage young people to get active with the hopes of combating the sharp increase in child obesity in the U.S. over the past 30 years.
